Michelle Miller-White - SLC
I began the FA job on a whim in 2000, applying as “just a job” I never expected it to become a career that I’d spend my life loving. When I started, we had 10 CRJ200s, and every base besides SLC was on the west coast, flying only the EMB120. At that time, the company President was the nephew of the founder, a true family company, and it felt that way. So much has changed in those 23-plus years.
Over the course of my tenure, there were a few attempts at union organizations, but I was never interested, I didn’t feel we needed one, and I never got involved. During this time, I’ve witnessed inequitable treatment to varying degrees.
My deciding factor in joining our SkyWest AFA campaign was after experiencing ‘hold pay’ in December 2021. The hold pay offered to the group, agreed upon by the FAs and the current SIA representation, was not what the SIA EC implemented many months later. That flight paid $46 less than it should have paid pre-hold pay implementation. This one leg almost paid for one month’s worth of union dues, just one flight!
Unfortunately, our family company no longer has our best interests in mind. The best solution is to take complete control away from management and unionize to allow our voices to be heard.
