Keith MacKinnon - SLC
Like so many of us, when I first started my career at SkyWest, I didn't see a reason for us to unionize.
I believed SIA was enough. Things seemed—to me anyway—to be pretty good here. It really did feel like a tight-knit family. There were only 700 flight attendants, two partners, and two types of aircraft—the Brasilia and the 200.
We grew extremely quickly, and that feeling of family slowly faded. SIA turned into a rotating door of scandal after scandal.
I've always been one to speak my mind, and I became a very vocal critic of SIA. People constantly told me that if I was unhappy with SIA, I ought to run for the board myself instead of complaining, so I tried to do just that. I informed the board of my intent to run in our last election.
The board responded, saying I was ineligible to run. They stated that I'd been too critical of SIA in the past, and they then changed the bylaws to keep me or any other critics off the board.
That was the final straw for me. It just proved how incredibly corrupt the board had become.
If they won't let me at least try to fix our broken system, the only option is to change it entirely.
Things can't improve until we come together to demand improvement.
Let's do it!
