The company has a union-busting culture.
SkyWest presents being "union-free" as a point of pride. In training you'll hear it as a badge of honor. What you won't hear is how it stays that way: for decades, management has used fear, misinformation and paid consultants to keep its Flight Attendants from organizing.
The reason is simple. Without a union, management holds all the power. It sets pay, schedules and work rules alone, and it can discipline or terminate a Flight Attendant with no independent process to answer to. "Union-free" means employee-voice-free.
You deserve to know that going in. You also deserve to know that we're changing it.

You'll hear the company's story first.
Before you work a single trip, training will tell you SkyWest is proudly "union-free," that SIA already represents you, and that unions are outsiders. It is delivered warmly, by people you'll like, and it is designed to settle the question before you've had a chance to ask it. Many of us believed it at first, too. Then we read what a contract actually does.
Twelve months, the longest in the industry.
It can be extended at management's sole discretion. No union can intervene in discipline during probation; that's a legal limit. What a contract can do is shorten it, as AFA has done at other airlines, and protect you fully the day it ends.
You'll decide what kind of airline this becomes.
Once you're flying, you can sign an AFA authorization card. When a majority of SkyWest Flight Attendants have, we vote on our union, and then on our first contract.
What SIA is, and isn't.
SIA is the SkyWest Inflight Association. Management created it, funds it and controls it, and presents it to Flight Attendants as their representation. The effect is that many Flight Attendants believe they already have a voice at the table, so they never look for a real one. SIA has never been elected by the Flight Attendants and has never been certified by the National Mediation Board as a bargaining representative. It cannot negotiate a binding contract, and it cannot stop a termination. Tap each one.

We're organizing our own SkyWest AFA Flight Attendant Union. Not a third party: us, run by SkyWest Flight Attendants, with AFA-CWA's legal strength behind it.
