✈️ Why We Need Our Own SkyWest AFA Union

Our jobs deserve real protection and a real voice. Right now, we have no legally enforceable contract. That means management can change our working conditions, pay, schedules, and policies at any time—without notice, input, or accountability.

We do the same job as mainline Flight Attendants—so why are we paid up to 45% less? Every day, SkyWest Flight Attendants ensure the safety and comfort of our passengers, respond to inflight emergencies, and serve as first responders in the sky. Yet under the current tiered system, regional Flight Attendants are paid significantly less for doing the same essential work.

The tier system must end. Together with Flight Attendants at other regional airlines, we are building the collective strength to demand real respect and better pay. We aim to end this unjust divide between regional and mainline careers.

SkyWest Flight Attendants already enjoy some positive aspects of our job, but we’ve also seen how quickly things can change. Over the years, management has made unilateral decisions that have impacted our pay, schedules, flexibility, and overall working conditions, without our input. None of the things we appreciate about our job are protected or guaranteed.

With a union contract, change requires our approval. A contract would lock in what we value and give us the legal right to bargain for improvements. It would create a clear, enforceable process to address violations and ensure our voice is heard before changes are made. When things go wrong, we’d finally have the power to take action—and that’s something we simply don’t have now.

The truth is, the airline industry is constantly shifting, and we feel those impacts first. When the economy tightens or corporate priorities change, Flight Attendants often face the consequences through reduced flexibility, benefit cuts, stagnating wages, or increased pressure on the job. Without a union, we’re left without a say in those decisions. With a union, we can stand together and negotiate from a position of strength.

With AFA-CWA, we gain legal power and a seat at the table. With our SkyWest AFA Union, we’ll stand in solidarity with over 50,000 AFA Flight Attendants nationwide. AFA has over 75 years of experience winning legally enforceable contracts, protecting jobs, and advancing our careers—and we’ll be part of that progress.

We are stronger together. By joining the AFA family, SkyWest Flight Attendants become part of a growing movement to elevate and empower all regional Flight Attendants. Our unity will be the key to transforming this industry and securing the future we all deserve.

🚫 How SIA Is Not a Union

  • SIA is made to look like a union, but it’s not. SkyWest created SIA to give the appearance of representation while maintaining full control behind the scenes.

  • Yes, SIA holds elections—but they’re not truly independent. Management influences these elections, and the Department of Labor (DOL) has taken action because of this interference.

  • It has no legal power. SIA cannot bargain a legally binding contract, file grievances through the courts or National Mediation Board, or compel SkyWest to honor any agreement.

  • It answers to management, not to us. Every message, proposal, and “win” is filtered through what SkyWest allows. There is no independent decision-making or legal recourse.

  • SIA exists to prevent us from organizing a real union. It’s a management strategy—plain and simple—to prevent us from having true collective power through AFA-CWA.

🗳️ The Process: Where We’re At

  • Step 1: Sign Cards. We’re collecting authorization cards to show the National Mediation Board (NMB) that we want a union election.

  • Step 2: File for an election. Once we reach a strong majority of signed cards, we file with the NMB to trigger a vote.

  • Step 3: Vote YES for SkyWest AFA! This is our chance to win the right to bargain legally and hold management accountable.

🚀 What Happens After We Win Our Union Election?

A YES vote means we’re in control of what comes next. Here’s how we move forward—together.

✈️ We choose our union leaders. After winning our election, SkyWest Flight Attendants will choose our first group of union leaders—Flight Attendants who understand our job, needs, and priorities. These leaders will help guide us through the next phase of building our union and preparing for contract negotiations.

🤝 We choose our negotiating team. We’ll select a group of SkyWest Flight Attendants from among our ranks to serve as our bargaining team. This team will be trained and supported by AFA’s experienced negotiators—experts who’ve helped Flight Attendants at other airlines win real gains.

📣 We set our priorities together. Through private surveys, discussions, and meetings, we’ll decide what matters most to us—from pay and schedules to flexibility, reserve, and quality of life. These priorities will guide our bargaining team at the negotiating table.

🛡️ We gain legal rights and power. Management will be legally required to negotiate with us in good faith. We’ll no longer be at the mercy of sudden policy changes or unfair decisions—our voices will finally carry weight backed by federal law.

🗳️ We vote on our first contract. No contract goes into effect unless a majority of SkyWest Flight Attendants vote to approve it. We’ll have the final say, and nothing will be implemented without our approval.

🔁 We build a strong, ongoing union. Once our first contract is in place, we continue to build strength and unity. Our union will be led by Flight Attendants, for Flight Attendants, and focused entirely on protecting our rights and improving our future.

This is how we create lasting change. With AFA, we are not alone. We are joining a family of over 50,000 Flight Attendants who have walked this path and won. Now it’s our turn.
