Romero’s Journey: A Tale of Courage and Resilience
Romero made history as the first Black SIA President, striving to improve the lives of SkyWest Flight Attendants. Unfortunately, his tenure was plagued by racism, and an alarming lack of support from management. Despite his best efforts to advocate for flight attendants, he was forced out by the SIA Board in coordination with management.
In this eye-opening interview, Romero shares his experiences, from facing viral racist text messages to the lack of separation between SIA and SkyWest management which created an impossibly hostile environment. His story underscores the importance of having a union that genuinely stands up for its members, free from management’s control.
AFA-CWA Constitution and By-Laws: A Commitment to Equality
The AFA-CWA Constitution and By-Laws enshrine the union’s commitment to fighting racism and bigotry. Key sections include:
Mission Statement (Article I): AFA-CWA is dedicated to eliminating discrimination and harassment based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or any other legally protected status.
Objectives (Article III): The union aims to foster a safe and healthy workplace, free from discrimination, harassment, and retaliation.
These principles ensure that every member’s rights are protected and that the union remains a champion of fairness and justice.
Historical Advancements in Diversity by AFA-CWA
AFA-CWA has a long and proud history of advocating for diversity and inclusion, making significant strides in creating a more equitable aviation industry for marginalized communities. Some notable achievements include:
Advocacy for LGBTQ Rights: AFA-CWA was among the first unions to support LGBTQ flight attendants, advocating for policies that protect against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
Civil Rights Movement Support: The union played a critical role during the Civil Rights Movement, supporting Black flight attendants in their fight for equal opportunities and fair treatment.
Trailblazers in Leadership: Leaders like AFA-CWA International Vice President Keturah Johnson have been pivotal in advancing diversity within the union and the aviation industry. Keturah, featured by the AFL-CIO for Black History Month, has been a powerful advocate for labor rights and social justice, inspiring many with her dedication and leadership.
AFA-CWA: Championing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
By joining the AFA-CWA, SkyWest Flight Attendants will be part of a larger family of over 50,000 flight attendants across 20 carriers who benefit from the union’s unwavering commitment to diversity and inclusion. Here’s how AFA-CWA supports its diverse membership:
